Champion Motor Grader Update

Hello Forum Friends. This is an update from Champion Motor Graders...not a sales pitch. The past few years have been very difficult for this small family owned manufacturing business. At times we weren't sure what our next move was. Earlier in 2012 we were presented with an unlikely opportunity. We were approached by our #1 competitor, LeeBoy. They had an interest in our C80C and C86C grader models. LeeBoy has now acquired these 2 models from Champion and they are now being marketed through their new business line LB Performance Paving Products. I'm not going to try and explain their business strategy or why they have a separate business line called LBP. What I can tell you is that LeeBoy has made us the vendor to keep producing these graders for them. So when I say its the same great product manufactured by the same great people I really mean it. So far the new arrangement is working well. LeeBoy has been very helpful in gearing our operation back up. Champion Motor Graders is still in the business of engineering and manufacturing our other remaining models which do not compete with LBP. We also still market and sell C80C and C86C Champion graders outside of North America. So essentially nothing changes for my International Dealers. So when you see a new LBP G700 Motor Grader you will know it was a Champion, which was a Volvo, which was a Champion, which started out as a Lee, and even had some LeeBoy branding in the early 80's. Crazy right? Talk about a 32 year long circle to go around. We are excited to be working so closely with what used to be our strongest competition. It's a new world out there friends, a world where fierce throat biting competition is giving way to strategic partnerships aimed at reducing cost, improving quality, and ultimately serving the customers better. Photos below are of the first LBP G-700 formally known as a C80C.

Caterpillar 140H transmission problem

Having a problem with a 140H grader. I am sure its a simple fault but I cannot access SIS right now to give me an idea of pressures etc. Its a basic 5HM machine with mechanical pump on 3306. I have run ET and it shows only VHP solenoid as being high current. The machine will select all gears when the wheels are raised in the air (suggesting signal to solenoids is ok) but if you put it back on the ground it will only drive in gears 5678 forward and 456 reverse. In these gears it has plenty of drive and in the non working gears the machine will move very slightly. The oil looks clean. I am not sure how the transmission is configured internally but I am almost certain that somebody will be able to tell by the gears that are working. The valve block has been dismantled before from what I can tell. Any help would be much appreciated as here in Sierra leone I am pretty much alone and being a VOLVO trained fitter is not helping right now. Thanks in advance.

Champion 720R Clutch issues

$

Hello from the South Island of New Zealand. I have a question regarding the clutch system on our 1985 Champion 720R Grader. We recently bought the grader to replace our old Cat 112 when it threw a leg out of bed. I use it to grade the tracks on our farm and hunting block, which involves a lot of hill work (some steep grades) and hard material.

I have done about 50 hours on the new machine and have noticed some alarming traits - mainly around when the engine stalls in tough going on a hill. What happens is this:

The engine starts to stall if under load / too high a gear / I hit a big rock
I go to dip the clutch to downshift and as the engine is slowing, I can't depress the clutch
The grader stalls, still can't press the clutch
The grader starts to roll, brakes are ineffective as there is no engine power
Can't get brakes to work as I can't start the grader as engine has stalled and can't shift to neutral
Can't lower blade as no hydraulics
Grader still rolling...

I am now reliant on the handbrake to stop 15 tons of metal taking off down the hill. It seems inherently unsafe and I fear that if this happens in the wrong place, or with an inexperienced operator then we could have a really nasty accident. Is this normal? Any advice / tips? Or am I just best advised to sell it and get something safer in the event of a stall on the hill?

Thank you for allowing me to post on your forum - any advice very much appreciated.

Simon

Size: 58.2 KB. I asked a quote to Finning and the cost is US37,500.00 for the complete circle.
Does any of you have found an alternative? Like filling the teeth with welding and giving them their shape again. And also, how do you change that? since it`s a whole circle

Detroit 671 needs a new block heater

My Wabco 555 grader has a Detroit 671 and the in-block coolant heater has a short in it. It is located behind the blower drive and is kind of a stinker to get at. I was thinking of replacing it with a recirculating heater. The upper fitting looks easy to get at on the top of the water manifold but I'm not sure to find a bottom connection for the heater. How far down does the water jacket go on the block? I would send a picture but then I'd have to wash off all the oil.....
Thanks

Galion 118B Motor Grader Parting out or complete. Have Questions

Hi, I have been assigned to part with some equipment that has been sitting around. I have trouble just scrapping things that still have good parts. It is a Galion 118 b that was just parked and allowed to deteriorate. It is complete but rough. Can anyone tell me what engine is in it. It has a Cummins fuel system and the block is Cummins color but I cannot tell for sure. I know some of these had detroits but I am not sure about this one. A tag on the side indicates internal engine work was done at some time. If any of you need parts or want to buy this complete please respond. It is in Cape Coral Florida by FT Myers. Nice and warm here, might be a good road trip...... :)

After reading a post about what happened on a job I thought it would be funny to hear some stories. About what happened to you. I will tell on myself 1st
I hauled top soil for a company, I went to my address the man had back around his home and into his garden area he wanted it dumped in the middle of garden so he could spread the dirt all directions. As I backed into the area the soil was soft so I hit the gas a little and then the unthinkable happened . The truck fell into an old made septic tannk I had to crawl out the side window over the hood to get out. What a stinking mess. It took 2 cranes to lift the truck out of the tank. The owner had city sewer and had no idea the tank was in his yard. I did get to sell him 15 loads of dirt to fill that hole in his yard.

Question about grading a road

Howdy folks,

I have about a mile of gravel road that I need to grade. The first quarter mile is washboarded and full of potholes as well as the the last quarter mile. The middle seems to be OK and just needs to be machined. The road has not been graded since it was built and the people who live on the road have just been filling in the potholes for the last several years. The county does not maintain it and left it up to the homeowners to do so. My question is would you go ahead and reshape the entire road or just the first quarter mile and the last quarter mile and machine the rest??

I have recently purchased a galion 118B Motor Grader.
It is a good running condition, the only issue is that it keeps jumping out of low range.
Is this a common issue with the machine and is it an easy fix? If not how easy is it to convert it to an autobox?
