We got a 740 champion grader(1987), it seems like its in high range, 1st gear is way to fast, controller says its in 1st, grader is new to us(bought at auction)and I have no experience working with them or on them, is there a high and low range, it was working fine when we first got it, fixed some lights, replaced a missing chain on the r/s rear, other than that it hasn't moved 30 ft lol. any help would be greatly appreciated. it shifts good thru its gears, just seems to be in high gear.

2012 CAT 120M no hot start
we have a 120M at the shop. running a CAT 6.6 ACERT
it will start and run fine until the observed coolant temp gets to around 170+/-deg. and you shut down the grader, it will not die and will run fine all day as long as it is kept running.
once shut off it will not start again until the observed coolant temp cools down to 140+/-deg, then it starts fine and runs fine again.
fuel rail pressure will not climb above 2500+/-psi on start up when hot (book says it needs 3625psi to start)**reason we replaced the injection pump/same issue with new pump**
we have gone through the CAT ETM and done every test and check there is.
we have replaced the cam and crank sensors, replaced the injection pump, reflashed the ECM numerous times. swaped out the booster fuel pump/water sep. with another vehicle.
their are only two things left to replace.... and the book says to replace one or the other depending on which test you perform....
ALL 6 injectors and lines.... or the Engine ECM....
We have even had a CAT mechanic that is there for our warrenty equipment, ponder over and help check it out, he too is at a loss....

New to Back Slopes
Well I decided that if I was going to have a real grader experience I should do some back slopes. Having fixed my saddle pins retraction function and tightened up circle I put the 570A to work cutting in a new driveway for a neighbor which resulted in my getting to increase the sight distance from the main road to the new driveway by clearing vegetation and earth from the back slope from the main road.

Just a little over my head but I'm learning. Found myself a little tensed and stressed after a couple of hours of this. Suspect that I'll go back over this next spring.
Will need to make some adjustment to moldboard / shims as I had a little trouble retracting my blade slide from full right extension, maybe due to rail wear and moldboard leverage being way out there.
Questions: Is most back slope work done on the right side of the operator? Does it work the same for both right and left? I ask this because of the circle side shift ram location.

Asphalt Clean Up
Just bought a John Deere 570B with 510 hours on it, state owned. It's a sharp tractor, but has some asphalt dried up on it. How do I get this off the metal frame & fiberglass hood etc. I don't want to damage paint if possible. Want to bring back to new condition.
Thanks Men!

first timer
first timer
Hello, this is actually my first time twice. My first time posting on a forum(so if I do something wrong - please set me straight immediately). And two, I just accepted a part time job as a snow plow driver for the township I live in. I will be using a Cat 140G with wing blade. I went to a heavy equipment school and got the basics on how to use heavy equipment including road graders. I used a Gallion and a John Deer road grader. We did some ditch cutting and road building but no snow plowing. So I am looking for any tips, advise, insight or other helpful input I can get. Any place on the web I can get info or watch videos. As the saying goes "good information is good information no matter where it comes from" Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx Wes

Boots on the ground
Depending on what you are doing with your grader, there are times when you need good people on the ground with you. Cleaning out stakes, around manholes, and along curbs. I like a surveyor that is not above checking his or her numbers when the grade does not seem right. I always tell people that are working on the ground not to be afraid to come and tell me if they see something wrong. Sometimes they can notice things on the ground that I might have missed. I think a good dump man is an art in itself. Anything that makes my job easier. Any thoughts on this.

Hi, new guy here. Need hydraulic trouble shooting advice. Cat 160 H s/n ASD****
Hi folks!
Left blade hyd. lift slow, until you raise right side. Then get speed for both control valves.
I changed implement relief valve on combination valve, on pump. New resolver valve in combo valve. New signal valve. New pressure valve, that is bolted on combo. valve.
Maybe line relief valve on control valve bank, for blade lift?
Any ideas where to go next, would be apprecieated.

Reading Motor Grader forum
I have just finished reading all the threads in the Motor Grader forum! It took me two weeks of reading 2-4 hours every day. May I have my operators license now or must I do a ride along test also? :) After reading all that information, I am sure I am qualified! Wish I could remember it all. Many of you have said that also, "I know that information is on a thread here somewhere." Ha! One of the benefits of having read the forum, is getting a sense of the comradery among operators from all over the world talking to each other as if they were next door but probably have never met face to face. Thanks for this forum.
